Winter, the Perfect Time for Remodeling

When you typically think of working on a remodeling project, you consider working in the spring, or fall, and sometimes the summer, but rarely do you think of doing remodeling in the winter. Winter has traditionally been a dry spot for remodeling due to the shorter days, the concern over sawdust and chemical fumes being trapped in the home, and inclement weather. We’re here to let you know those concerns are outmoded, and that the traditional notion of winter being a dead period for remodeling, leads to a low demand, which makes it perfect to get remodeling done cheap.

Why Light, Air Quality, and Weather Aren’t Deal Breakers Anymore

With our current technology, and infrastructure, the problems that stopped the winter months from being a time to effectively renovate have been solved.

Though the daylight hours in winter are shorter then in the other months, electric lights have been in popular use since the early 1900’s. And with the improvements in light bulbs in the last couple of decades artificial lighting can mimic the color and brightness of daylight, while being energy efficient. This allows workers to accurately continue work after the sun has gone down.

The issue of dust and fumes has largely been solved by modern technology as well. Tools have attachments to catch sawdust, and there are improved vacuums and air filters for those that don’t. For caustic fumes, plastic zip-doors can temporarily be installed to block the spread of fumes through a home. These simple solutions make clean-up during the winter simple and safe.

Finally, the problem of weather being a concern for work delays still exists, but is nowhere near as drastic as it was. With our modern road systems, a city can effectively be cleared of snow in a day, which doesn’t represent too large of a work delay.

Contractor Scheduling and Availability

The tradition of winter being a no-go season for remodeling and renovation works in our favor now though. The traditional low demand for contractors means that they are largely available and have open scheduling during the winter. The lack of major remodeling and renovations also means that the associated government agencies aren’t as busy and permit approvals are quicker.

Reduced Prices on Materials

Another reason why winter is the perfect time to remodel is the reduced prices on materials. Manufacturing companies reduce prices during the winter for two reasons, the first is because winter is a slow time for remodeling and they sell less, so they reduce prices hoping to entice customers into buying more. The second reason is that they’re trying to get rid of the last year’s inventory, to make room for inventory for the new year. These reasons combined can lead to great deals on materials for home remodeling.
