If you go for a run every morning, is there a safe place to do that near your potential lot? If you want an exercise room, have you planned for a space to put it in? If you tend to hold on to things, how much storage will you need to plan for? All of these questions are unique to your lifestyle and habits, so you should think deeply about how those habits can impact your home needs.
Where You Want To Build
When you begin looking for the perfect piece of land for your dream home, you may have this romantic notion that you’ll know it when you see it. Take some time to be a little more methodical. Different states and even different counties have different building codes and different allowances. For instance, if you know you want a privacy fence, you wouldn’t want to build in a county that limits fence height to 5 feet. Think about the things that you want, and then see what areas allow them. You should also plan to have the property inspected not just for how a house would fit but also where power lines would come from, how difficult it would be to grade for a driveway and other factors.

If they’re not, you may find you need to sell to find a place that’s both of yours once you’re married. Likewise, if you don’t plan for a family in your design, you may find you’ve outgrown the house long before you intended to.
