You never know when snow loads will be more than your home can handle, and without proper maintenance, even the most well-built home can fall prey to many winter threats.
Winter has officially arrived. For some homeowners, this is a terrifying sentiment. Winter can cause damage to most homes very easily, even if they are built to perfect standards. You never know when snow loads will be more than your home can handle, and without proper maintenance, even the most well-built home can fall prey to many winter threats. When you prepare for the season, however, getting through winter will cause you much less stress as a homeowner. Here are a few tips you can use to help you.
1. Turn off outside faucets.
You’re not going to be using your hose during the winter, so make sure that outside faucet is well and truly closed up for the season. Many hardware stores sell covers that can be placed over these faucets, and you can try using expanding foam to insulate the area. Why? Outside faucets are a large contributing factor for burst pipes.
2. Check your sump pump.
There’s nothing worse than a sump pump malfunction when you’re three days into being snowed into your home. Always check your sump pump every few months; however, when you know there’s going to be a winter storm, run a few gallons of clean water through it and make sure it’s running properly.
3. Prevent your gutters from damming.
When leaves and debris gather in your gutter, it can cause a dam-like effect on any water running through. And while this can cause a problem regarding pools of water seeping into your walls, when that water freezes, it can do more damage. Are you noticing a lot of icicles forming in one particular spot? Check to make sure you remove any debris blocking the clean flow of water.
