With the summer now here, what better time than now to design your own deck or completely refurbish your existing one, to your exact tastes and desires?
There’s something intrinsically enjoyable about sitting on a wooden deck. It’s back to nature, almost like a treehouse for adults. Not only a place to socialize or entertain guests but also, an area to relax after a long week or tough day where you can just sit out and soak in the sun, basking in an aura of tranquility. With the summer now here, what better time than now to design your own deck or completely refurbish your existing one, to your exact tastes and desires?
Popular Decking Designs
The traditional rectangular deck with a hand rail will always be popular. However, homeowners are increasingly looking for more contemporary styles and features. Ideas to consider are decks that “wrap-around” the house, or decks that are built on several levels or in unusual shapes.
A sunken planting box for planting trees or small bedding plants can look great. Or consider raised planting boxes which incorporate seating. Seating made from the same material as the deck is always a nice feature. Lighting, especially recessed and spotlighting, looks wonderful in the evening.
If you want to really throw yourself into it, why not have a hot tub cut into the deck? It’s not only a glamorous feature but a useful one in any season. A popular trend now is to include a patio and a deck in the garden – one to get the morning sun and one the evening sun. That way the garden can include two beautiful natural materials: stone and wood.
How Long Does a Deck Last?
A wooden deck built from hardwood or pressure treated softwood which is correctly maintained can last for 15 years or more. Composite decks made from wood fiber and recycled plastic are also an option if you want a longer lifespan. Your own personal maintenance can add to the longevity of your decking. You should give your deck a good clean at least once a year with a stiff brush or a pressure spray. This prevents a buildup of algae which will make the deck slippery. It also removes debris from between the boards which will encourage decay. If the decking timber has been stained, it will need to be re-stained every 2 or 3 years. Alternately, you may prefer to leave it and allow the deck to develop a natural weathered and bleached appearance.
