Things to Consider Before Building a Custom Home

Imagine waking up in your brand new two story home. The paint is still fresh and the carpet feel soft under your feet. You walk downstairs to your kitchen where sunlight streams into your many windows from all sides. It’s the perfect way to start a brand new day! Not your cup of tea? Replace the carpet with hardwoods or an open floor plan. That’s the beauty of a custom home. It gives you the freedom to create your dream home and live where you’ve always wanted to. It’s a great investment that will return happiness for years to come. Before you build your custom home, there are a few things to consider, though.

Tips for Having a Custom Home Built

  1. Search for your lot – Put some time and energy into finding the perfect lot. Your new home is one that you’ll want to be in for a while. Don’t sell yourself short. Make sure that you check the lot out at different times of day to see what time you’ll get sun and how you feel about the area during the day vs night. You might also consider a semi-custom home in a pre-existing community. The beauty of a custom home is that you get to choose!
  2. Consider the style of home that suits you – There are many different home styles and floor plans. It’s important to have an idea of what you want in a home before you hire a company to help you build your home. While our home designers and builders will be happy to help you come up with a plan, you ultimately want to know that it’s something that you want. Do some research and find your favorite type of home. Then discuss the different options that the company offers!
  3. Create a realistic budget – Obviously you don’t know exactly how much it’s going to cost you to have the home built before you meet with a professional home builder. You will, however, be able to make an estimate by doing some research. Make sure that you’ll be able to come up with enough funds before you start your home building project. Otherwise you may find that you don’t have enough money halfway through, which can be problematic.
