Most homes, especially town homes and apartments, have at least one small bathroom. These small bathrooms can appear to become increasingly cramped with poor decorating, poor lighting, and poor color choices. Conversely, you can enhance the size of your bathroom (in appearance only) with a few simple tricks.
The first way to “increase” the size of your bathroom is to lighten up. No, not your attitude, but your bathroom’s wall color. When paired with a modest pattern of only slightly darker design, a light color can really make your bathroom appear bigger. Additionally, all trim should be painted white. Adding a white crown molding can add height to the room and make your small bathroom really appear larger.
Next, you should address your flooring situation. A nice, light tile of medium size should make the room look bigger. Avoid small tile, as this will actually make the room “shrink.”
If you cannot afford to replace your floor, a simple, light colored area rug can do the trick.
As for decorations, fixtures, and cabinets, less is more.
- Minimize wall decorations. Use one or two medium size items. Avoid grouped pictures.
- Use a pedestal sink if possible as eliminating the cabinet will make your bathroom look bigger.
- Recess any wall cabinets or eliminate them.
- If you cannot afford to change your current cabinets, paint dark cabinets white.
- If you want to use window treatments, use a simple window valence that does not cover the window.
- Keep your decor selection light in color and texture. Add hints of darker colors in moderation.
Another way to fool your senses is to use glass shelving, a clear shower door/curtain, and mirrors. Since the shelving is see-through, it does not appear to take up as much space as a solid-colored shelf. And the mirrors reflect light and make a room appear larger. A glass shower door or clear shower curtain on your shower will make your bathroom look bigger as well.
Finally, lighting will play a huge part in making a small bathroom look bigger.
- Add a skylight
- Remove curtains from the windows
- Replace light bulbs with CFL light bulbs. They provide bright, natural light to any room and are energy efficient.
- Add recessed lighting and eliminate light fixtures that jut out into the room
