Home Construction Tips: Consider an Open-Floor Plan for Your Anne Arundel County Home

Custom home construction can be more complex than you might think.

Custom home construction can be more complex than you might think. You’ve got plenty of choices to make about how you want it to look, both on the inside and on the outside. Have you ever thought about an open floor plan for your custom home in Anne Arundel County? Here are some things to think about while you do it.

What Is It?

During the first phase of any new home construction in Anne Arundel County, you need to decide what floor plan you want. If you don’t know what an open floor plan is, then it’s a good sign that you would want to learn more about it. Two larger rooms are connected into one single living space. There are no walls or doors between each room. For instance, you could choose to have the kitchen, dining room, and living connected through the open floor plan.

Advantages

Spend More Time Together: It’s hard to spend time together with your family. Your spouse is probably working the same hours as you, or if you work during the day, they might work at night. Meanwhile, your kids are in school or are working or are always out with friends. One significant advantage of an open floor plan is that you can spend more time with your family. Socialize with your guests or other family members who spend most of their time over at your house.

Bring in More Light: Bringing in more light is a big deal in the fall and winter, especially in Anne Arundel County. That way, you can save some money, because you won’t have to spend as much money on your utility bills this fall and winter.

Create More Space: In a smaller custom home, a closed-floor plan will make it feel even smaller. But in your custom home, you can use an open floor plan to make it feel wide open.

Disadvantages

Not As Much Privacy: However, there are some problems with an open floor plan as well. For one thing, you won’t have as much privacy. If you just want to sit at the kitchen table reading, it can be hard to concentrate if someone is in the kitchen singing as they wash the dishes.

Smaller Walls: Even if there are walls, they are smaller and lower than regular walls. You won’t be able to hang more pictures or other decorations on your wall or stop the sunlight from fading the wallpaper or the hardwood floors in your custom home.

More Maintenance: You will also need more maintenance and cleaning – you won’t be able to hide a kitchen full of dirty dishes as easily.
