Labor Day has come and gone for this year. We are now riding into the final quarter of the year. The fall is always a pretty time of year that everyone looks forward to; as a wise man once said, life begins again in the fall. Previously, we published some guidelines on landscaping during the summer months. Here now is a follow-up: what to do when you go to landscape around your home during the fall.
Make Sure the Lawn is Aerated
First things first, you will want to make sure that the lawn is aerated. What does this entail? Any compressed soil will need to be broken up again. That way, it won’t starve the roots of much-needed water and nutrients. For landscaping smaller yards, you can use a garden fork to do this. Depending on the size of your property, though, you might need to try a different approach. Walk-behind aerators can pull up soil plugs that are 2.5-3 inches deep. By the time spring returns, these plugs will have broken down again.
Take Care of the Grass
You must also do what you can to take care of the grass. One way to do this is to feed the grass. Summer isn’t quite over yet, but this is still a good time to reduce the amount of fertilizer you use. When you do this, you help the perennials in your yard recalibrate so that they don’t focus on leaf production but prioritize root strength instead. Roots continue to develop until ground temperatures hit 40 degrees. Before this occurs, you’ll want to apply high-phosphorus mixes to your lawns to help the roots perk back up by early spring.
Be Careful When Mowing
Mowing season is at its height during spring and summer. You won’t have to worry about this landscaping task that often during the fall. The turf should be cut down to 1.25 inches during the last mowing session.
Pick Up Leaves
One of the most relaxing things about autumn is watching the leaves drop from the trees. Follow this principle as you consider how to complete your next landscaping task. In other words, pick up fallen leaves by raking them into a plastic tarp and then dump them in a compost bin along with the leaves you pick out of the gutters.
Plant Some New Shrubs
Finally, you will want to think about adding some new life to your home’s landscape. Planting shrubs is a great way to pull this off; this way, plants can use the cool and moist soil to their advantage and create stronger roots.
