How to Tell When There is Too Much Lint
If your laundry seems to take forever to dry, then that is a good indication that something has gone wrong. Then gauge how hot the dryer is to the touch, even after the latest cycle has been completed. It may not be necessary to replace your dryer just yet; first, get the vents inspected. The lint filter, also known as the trap, does an admirable job of minimizing the amount of lint buildup on your clothes and bedding. However, the duct still needs to be cleaned out from time to time. If not, then the airflow will be obstructed, causing the dryer to overheat.
Tips for Cleaning the Vent Duct
So now with that in mind, here are some helpful tips for cleaning out the vent duct:
Find where the duct begins and ends. Look for a small exhaust port in the back featuring an aluminum elbow; this component attaches to a small opening on an outside wall to allow the hot air to escape.
Disconnect the dryer from its electrical power supply. Alternatively, you could try turning off the natural gas or propane valve. Take away any clamps or metal tape that you come across – doing this will allow you to pry the vent away from the exhaust. However, be mindful of the gas line – creating a gas leak is very hazardous and easy to do.
Extricate the vent pipe from its attached wall duct. After that, pull off the duct cover. A dryer vent brush kit equipped with special vent brushes will then help make this entire process a snap.
Put the brush into the ductwork and spin counterclockwise. After you’ve done this, allow gravity to assist you.
Use a vacuum to scoop up all of the loose lint. Here, flexible hose attachments will be your best friend. Once you’re done, reassemble the dryer components and move the dryer back into place before giving it a trial run!
