Garages are essentially the modern equivalent of the carriage house, and as such, they started detached from the main home in the same way. In the 1940s and ’50s, it became increasingly common for families to be able to afford two cars. To make space for both vehicles and provide easy access to the house, it became prevalent for homes to have attached garages that directly lead to the home. Today, most homes are built with garages that are attached. There are still many positives to having a detached garage, however, and it may be the right choice to add to your Annapolis home.
More Design Options
An attached garage can dominate the look of a home, and if the house is small, it can overwhelm the rest of the building. A detached garage, on the other hand, stands apart as a separate but complementary structure. You have many more design options with the detached garage and by extension, more design freedom with the rest of your home. You can place the detached garage near or far from the house, depending on the property size, and sometimes even hide it from view entirely behind the home. You can also add additional living space over the garage if you’re adding it, something challenging if you’re building the garage as an attached addition.
Separation Of Space
If you’re using part of the space in the garage as an office or workshop, having it away from home can offer privacy and reduce the distractions of noise. An office in an attached garage is still easily accessed by kids or other family members, and you will likely be able to hear their activity, which may keep you from being able to focus. If space is a workshop, you may distract occupants of the home with the noise of your tools. In a detached garage, you have the buffer of space to give you solitude, privacy, and quiet.
Fresh Air
On days when the weather is beautiful, the short walk from a detached garage to the home isn’t an inconvenience. It can be pleasant to enjoy the sunshine (or see the stars) and get a little fresh air for a few minutes. Most people don’t get enough time outdoors, and it can improve your mood and make you more comfortable. Of course, if it is raining, snowing, or otherwise uncomfortable, this advantage of a detached garage disintegrates immediately.
