When custom homes are move-in ready, ask yourself: how much space do you need?
When homes are available for immediate delivery, do you move in right away? Sometimes you may not need to have a custom home built because in your new neighborhood, the custom homes might already be fully built and prepared for you and your family to take up residence in one. But when you think about your new custom home, also ask yourself: how much space do you need?
Your House and Your Lifestyle
First, assess your current lifestyle. How do you live your life? Because, depending on how and what you do, that will help determine how much space you will need in your new custom home. Are you:
- Out and about often? Or are you a homebody?
- Throwing parties and entertaining guests every weekend?
- Hosting relatives who often come to visit throughout the year?
- Working from home and need a home office?
The size of your property will influence all of these activities, so keep that in mind when choosing which of the available custom homes you purchase. A smaller house will have less room for storage, fewer places for guests to sleep, and a shortage of options for when you plan to expand your family. But a bigger house might not be ideal if you’re frequently traveling or otherwise spending time away from home.
What About the Future?
Once upon a time, the home you chose might have seemed like the best fit. But maybe when you were expecting an only child you had triplets instead. Perhaps the house has fallen into disrepair because you haven’t been able to afford the upkeep. Think about these other factors:
- Will you want the freedom to travel after you retire?
- How likely is it that parents and in-laws will move in with you?
- How much money are you currently saving?
How Much Effort?
One last question to consider is this: how much effort are you willing to put into your new custom home? Whether or not the custom homes in your area are ready to accept you without any further construction, they will need repairs, upgrades, and changes as the years pass. The kitchen or the TV room will probably be where you spend most of your time while at home. Dining and family rooms might not get as much attention. So what do you have to consider?
- How much maintenance will you do?
- Can you afford to pay property taxes and insurance fees for a larger lot?
- Also, are you going to be able to cover all of your utility bills?
