While it may make sense initially to install a few tiles, or to strip out your basement, doing so by yourself can have more extensive consequences.
We do a lot of renovation at Cedar Square Homes, so we have a pretty large history of working hard to make homes functional. We also hear quite a lot about home renovation that isn’t quite true. Most people have tons of misconceptions about what home renovation is all about, because they aren’t intimate with the industry. That’s what we’re here for! Let us walk you through some common myths that surround the home renovation industry.
Myth #1: It’s cheaper to DIY.
While it may make sense initially to install a few tiles, or to strip out your basement, doing so by yourself can have more extensive consequences. Overconfidence can sometimes get the better of us, and we’ll tackle projects we don’t have the skill for. You could end up costing yourself more money this way, if you make a mistake and need a professional to fix it. Go the smart route, and hire a professional from the beginning, so no mistakes are made with something so labor intensive.
Myth #2: Being energy efficient is expensive.
A lot of green products on the market are marked at a higher price; usually, this is because of their advanced technology, or their rarity. But, an energy efficient product (like a washing machine that uses less water, for example) is going to end up costing you less money in the long run. Saving water, saving electricity–it’s all going to come out to a much higher return in the end. So, if you’re looking to save money when you renovate your home, going energy efficient is actually your best bet!
Myth #3: My design style should be trendy.
You know what else used to be trendy? Rose ceramic bathtubs and flaming orange shag carpets. Trendy doesn’t always mean sustainable. So, maybe hold off for a while on the newest bathroom trends you see in the magazines–sinks made out of rocks, rustic-style showerheads, and others. Keep reminding yourself that your home, above all, needs to be functional. And if you’re unsure, ask a professional interior designer; they know what’s sustainable and what isn’t.
