Before massive amounts of snow blanket your home, make sure you are fully prepared to safely outlast the storm from inside.
Are you bundled up inside your home awaiting the full-fledged arrival of Winter Storm Jonas? The answer is probably yes. That, or you are still out making your rounds in preparation of being snowed in for an indefinite period of time – considering the Blizzard Warning. Afraid you missed something? Review the following home safety tips on how to outlast a snowstorm from inside!
Medicine
When a massive winter storm is approaching, it is imperative that you stock up on all of your necessary medical care. Make sure all of your current prescriptions are filled and that you will have enough medicine to make it through the storm in a healthy manner from home. It is also a good idea to make sure you have a first aid kit available in your home that includes: bandages, antibiotic ointment, ibuprofen, alcohol (to clean potential wounds) and antihistamines in the event of an allergic reaction.
Groceries
Naturally, in the face of a winter storm, people manically flock to the nearest grocery store. And they should! It may be hectic, but it is best to make sure that your home is fully stocked with enough food (for both people and pets) to outlast the storm. Be sure to get plenty of bread, cereal, and snacks that don’t require refrigeration. When buying milk and cheese, remember that the power may go out causing these items to spoil. TIP: If the power goes out, put your perishable items outside in the snow to keep them cold!
Power
There is a saying: Hope for the best, plan for the worst – that definitely applies in these scenarios. Make sure you have a battery powered flashlight, candles, warm clothes and a fully charged phone in the event of a power outage. If your basement is unfinished, avoid the area as it will likely be colder and draftier. If you are tempted to use your gas stove or portable barbeque to stay warm during a power outage – DON’T! Carbon monoxide poisoning is extremely deadly during power outages. It is also a good idea to adjust your faucets to a slow drip, to avoid freezing pipes. Bundle up, make memories with your family and do your best to stay warm and be patient!
