For some, a boring roof isn’t an option. It’s more than just an accessory, and becomes a canvas for impressive art.
If roofing seems particularly boring to you, let us prove you wrong. It may appear as though roofing is the least exciting part of building a home; it’s often simply considered a necessity, rather than something you can use to personalize. But for some, a boring roof isn’t an option. It’s more than just an accessory, and becomes a canvas for impressive art. Read on to discover how roofing is making a big statement.
The Art
Marlin Peterson is a mural artist. He’s used to doing walls and being commissioned for larger projects, and had never done a roof before the Washington State Art Trust commissioned him. He ended up using the Seattle Center Armory for his canvas. This roof would be seen by huge audiences every day, because it is directly under the Space Needle. Peterson thought hard, and eventually came up with an awesome concept: monolithic spiders.
The Process
Marlin started by clearing the roof of seagull droppings, who reportedly left him these presents every day he returned to work. The artist decided to paint Daddy Long Legs; two of them, spanning the entire roof, shadows and all. He calculated the shadow’s length, trajectory and opacity to make them as realistic as possible. The largest spider is 100 feet long. He used models and math to figure out how to place the spiders and add depth to them. The mural was finished in 2012.
What This Means
You probably aren’t looking to throw up spiders on the roof of your custom home, but it’s something to think about! The roofing industry is looking to make themselves more interesting. What better way to do that than making the roof more appealing from above?
