6 Pieces of Advice for Building a Koi Pond

Building a koi pond is much easier than you might assume, as well. If a koi pond is something you want to have, then take our advice!

Designing and building your own home is an opportunity to let your creativity shine. Even though it involves arranging a wide array of elements both inside and outside, these aspects can be used to fully realize the house you’ve always wanted and dreamed of for all these years. Building a koi pond is much easier than you might assume, as well. If a koi pond is something you want to have, then take our advice

Select and Place the Pond Itself

The first step is to decide what you want to do with your pond. Start by picking an area on your property to place the pond. One approach to this phase of the process is to figure out where you’ll be able to see the koi pond while you are inside the house. You’ll also want to ensure that you can enjoy the view of the water feature from the outside of your custom home as well. Then once that is taken care of, use spray paint to draw an outline of where the pond will be.

Prepare the Dig Spot

The second step is to prepare the dig spot where the pond will be built. Begin by digging to a depth of 12” to give the first shelf enough room for marginal plants. Then make sure that it is 1’ wide; beyond that, verify that the depth measures 24” and watch out for protruding tree roots that can interfere with your efforts.

Arrange the Position of the Pond Equipment

The third step is to determine the location of the actual koi pond equipment. Biological and mechanical filters are configured during this time, and this step is important because the water needs to clean enough to make your fish happy.

Insert the Pond Liner

Let’s say your custom home features a backyard pool. You’ve dealt with the liner as you open the pool in the spring and close it in the fall. A koi pond needs a proper liner as well. The underlayment and liner protect your lawn against water damage. However, the liner needs to be attached to the skimmer and filter to reach full effectiveness.

Use Rocks and Gravel as Hardscaping Features

Landscaping and hardscaping are two vital elements of boosting your home’s overall curb appeal. Assembling a koi pond calls for using rocks and gravel to cover the liner. Large stones, edge stones, ordinary rocks, and smooth stones come together to create a cohesive aesthetic that is more pleasing to the eye and protects your koi fish from hurting themselves as they swim around.

Finish It Up

LED lights, aerators, and water round out the design of your koi pond. Be sure to treat the water and clean up the lawn and garden around your pond to make sure weeds and fallen leaves don’t cause problems. Aquatic plants can help keep the water clean and give your koi something to snack on as well!
