Many homeowners forget about their home’s siding when it comes time for repairs and remodels, but the siding is incredibly important to keep your home in good condition.
Whether you are moving into your new home or looking to remodel the home you’ve been in for 20 years to make it into your dream home, chances are that replacing your home’s siding isn’t on your to-do list unless there is visible damage. Many homeowners forget about their home’s siding when it comes time for repairs and remodels, but the siding is incredibly important to keep your home in good condition. How can you tell whether or not your home is due for new siding?
Your Home Needs Frequent Painting
When was the last time you painted your home? If you painted your home within the past five years and it already needs to be redone, your home could need new siding. If your home’s siding is good quality and properly installed, it should only need to be repainted every 8-10 years.
Your Heating Bills Are Sky High
If your heating or cooling bills have crept higher and higher over the years without a change in your energy usage, your home’s siding could be the culprit. While a roof in need of replacement or improperly installed installation can also cause high energy bills, check your siding to see it should be replaced.
Rotting or Warping
Take a walk around your home and take a look at your siding. Is there any warping or rotting that you can see from the outside? This is a sure sign that you are in need of new siding. Take a hard object like a screwdriver and palpate the layer underneath warped siding to see if it has been affected. If that layer is rotting or soft, you are in desperate need of new siding.
Dry Rot
Use the same screwdriver you did previously and tap on the siding with the handle. Does anything happen? This is a great technique for revealing dry rot below the surface of your siding.
Fungus, Mold, or Mildew
If you have any sort of organic growth on the outside of your siding, particularly near the seams, it is a sign that water is somehow getting into the siding and could be being held in the wall itself. Some fungus occurs naturally on homes, so get a professional to examine your siding before deciding whether or not it is time for replacement.
