5 Air Purifying Houseplants

The common garden mum has air purifying qualities that can remove pollutants like ammonia, benzene, and more.

Later this week on March 20, we will welcome the First Day of Spring! There are several advantages to springtime – warm weather, thriving plant life, and longer, brighter days to name a few. Did you know that certain houseplants can improve the air quality within your home? If you want to welcome the season and ward off pollutants, consider living with one of the following air purifying houseplants. The best part? They are incredibly low maintenance and easy to keep alive!

Garden Mum

Each houseplant on this list was declared to have air purifying qualities based on NASA research. The garden mum is an inexpensive, colorful plant that is available at garden stores and can be planted outside once they’ve bloomed. Both inside and outside your home, the garden mum can remove the following pollutants: ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, and xylene.

Spider Plant

Spider plants are one of the most low maintenance houseplants to care for, making them ideal for forgetful plant owners. They enjoy bright, indirect sunlight and do well in cooler temperatures. The spider plant can remove the following pollutants: formaldehyde and xylene.

Snake Plant

Like the spider plant, the snake plant requires very little maintenance and is easy to keep alive. The snake plant thrives without water for extended periods of time and prefers indirect, low levels of sunlight. The snake plant can remove the following pollutants: benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, and xylene.

Bamboo Palm

Bamboo palms are capable of filtering an incredible amount of air, partly due to their size potential. Before you bring a bamboo palm into your home, make sure you have enough space – it could grow as tall as four to 12 feet high! Bamboo palms do a great job of removing the following pollutants: benzene, formaldehyde, and trichloroethylene.

Boston Fern

Boston ferns are a perfect solution if you want to clean the air from a cool location with high humidity and indirect sunlight. Boston ferns are low maintenance and only require a good watering about once a month. Boston ferns can remove the following pollutants: formaldehyde and xylene.
