March has come and gone. April is here, at last. The traditional swimming pool season doesn’t get going until Memorial Day. But that doesn’t mean you should deny yourself some fun in the sun! We know it wasn’t easy to winterize the pool at the end of last year. It can be equally as tricky opening it back up as warmer weather returns. We’ve put together a list of tips that should make the process easier, though!
Clean Off the Pool Cover
The first thing you need to do is clean. Yes, this means starting with the pool cover. After all, it caught all of the debris that could have fallen into the pool over the winter. Start a pump machine to remove any traces of standing water. Otherwise, those puddles could become breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Remove fallen leaves and other natural debris using a pool brush or a plastic rake. Please do not use a metal rake since they can puncture the cover.
Put the Cover Away Properly
Storing the pool cover should be relatively simple. Once you’ve cleaned it up, flatten it out. That way, you can inspect it for any unusual folds or creases. Give it a day or two to fully dry before you fold and store it. Make sure its temporary home is nice and dry.
Get Your Swimming Pool Ready
Now it’s time to move on. Check the pool for signs of wear and tear. Pay particular attention to the filter, the skimmer, and the lining. Don’t forget to brush and vacuum the pool as thoroughly as you can. That way, you won’t find anything disgusting in the water once the pool is ready to go.
Test the Chemical Balance
Specially-formulated chemicals are an essential part of responsible pool maintenance. That said, be sure to test the current chemical levels. If they are out of balance, using the pool could be unsafe. An easy way to double-check the chemical balance is to use your garden hose. Hard water can present a problem, though, so be prepared to deal with it. Pool opening kits also make the pool shock process much easier. Chlorinating the swimming pool also does a marvelous job of killing off stubborn algae. Algaecide and pool care pills can also help eliminate these nuisances. Go on – it’s time to have some fun!
